Davies, Shaw play well in first round at World Amateur Championship

             STELLENBOSCH, South Africa (Oct. 26, 2006) - ETSU senior Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) and junior Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) fared well during first round play Thursday in the World Amateur Team Championships at the Stellenbosch Golf Club.

 

            Both Davies and Shaw posted scores of 1-over-par 73 to tie for 35th on the individual leaderboard, and both had their scores count toward their respective team total. Davies and the Welsh contingent are currently tied for 9th, while Shaw and his Irish teammates are tied for 16th.

 

            The 2006 World Amateur Team Championships will be played over the next four days with final round action set for Sunday. This year marks the first time the four-day event has been played in Africa. Each team consists of two or three golfers, with the two lowest individual scores of each day becoming the team's aggregate score. The teams from Wales and Ireland both have three players attending the event. The 72-hole event consist of 74 teams competing for the coveted Eisenhower Trophy.
