JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 13, 2006) - When the best amateur players from around the world gather to compete for the World Amateur Championships next month in South Africa, the ETSU men's golf team will be well represented. Current ETSU standouts Rhys Davies (Brigend, Wales) and Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) will represent their respective home countries in the prestigious event.

            The 2006 World Amateur Team Championships will be played in Stellenbosch, South Africa, Oct. 26-29. This year marks the first time the championships have been played in Africa. Each team consists of two or three golfers, with the two lowest individual scores of each day becoming the team's aggregate score. The 72-hole event consist of 74 teams competing for the coveted Eisenhower Trophy.

Davies is the most tested of the duo on the international stage, playing in the Walker Cup and Palmer Cup, while also winning the British Boys Amateur Championship in 2003. Finishing the 2005-06 season ranked No. 4 nationally and garnering his second straight PING First-Team All-America honor, Davies will receive his share of attention in South Africa. Meanwhile, Shaw was selected as All-South Region and was a first-team All-Atlantic Sun Conference honoree a year ago.
