JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 19, 2006) - Earlier this week, ETSU senior Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) won the 2006 Scratch Players Championship with a chip-in birdie on the fourth playoff hole at the Somerby Golf Club in Byron, Minn.

Davies, a two-time PING first-team All-American who finished last season No. 4 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, ended regulation tied for the lead at 15 under par with 2005 Walker Cup teammate Oliver Fisher. Each shot 34 on Somerby Golf Club's back nine Thursday after the final round was shortened to nine holes by a 2 1/2-hour rain delay.

Both players then pared the first three playoff holes, before Davies chipped in for birdie and the win on the par-3 17th.

University of Minnesota's Bronson LaCassie, winner of the Western Amateur, finished third at 12 under par. NCAA individual champion Jonathan Moore of Oklahoma State finished fourth with UCLA junior Daniel Im another shot back.

Davies and his ETSU teammates will return to action in the 2006-07 season on Sept. 15 in the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Ga. The Bucs are coming off at 2005-06 season in which they finished 21st at the NCAA Championships and spent much of the season ranked in the nation's Top 15.
