IRVINE, Scotland (June 27, 2008) - Former ETSU All-American Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) teamed with Jonathan Caldwell to defeat American's Derek Fathauer and Chesson Hadley, helping Europe to a sweep of the United States during Friday morning's four-ball matches in the Palmer Cup presented by Monster at the Glasgow Golf Club.
With four points in all Friday morning, the Europeans used that momentum to win three and halve three other singles matches in the afternoon to recapture the Palmer Cup from the U.S., 14-10. While the Americans lead the all-time series 6-5-1, they have lost three straight in Europe.
Shaw and Caldwell allowed Europe to complete the sweep with the only match that went the complete 18 holes in the morning. The Americans held the lead for much of the front nine, however ultimately fell 1-up. The U.S. won the second and third before Europe claimed the fourth and fifth to send the match back to all square. The Americans would again take the lead after a birdie at No. 7 but Europe took Nos. 9 and 10. The two sides alternated the next three and again at Nos. 15 and 16 to even the match. Europe reclaimed the lead at No. 17 and halved the 18th to secure the victory.
Shaw ultimately fell in another tightly contested singles match, falling 1-up to Chesson Hadley. Hadley won the first hole with birdie and would hold the lead until conceding the fifth. The two players traded wins - Hadley at No. 6 and Shaw at the seventh - on the next two holes. Hadley rattled off three-straight birdie victories starting at No. 10. Shaw battled back with wins at the 14th and 15th but was unable to completely close the deficit.
