Shaw, Bucs in contention after round two in Puerto Rico
Saturday, March 1, 2008

RIO GRANDE, P.R. (March 1, 2008) - Senior Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) fired a 3-under-par 69 to move to third place on the individual leaderboard, and the No. 24-ranked ETSU men's golf team remains in contention following second round action Saturday in the Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club's River Course.

The Buccaneers are currently sixth on the team leaderboard, seven strokes off the pace set by No. 2 Alabama, which finished the day at 2-under 574 for the tournament. Alabama's Matthew Swan leads the individual leaderboard at 7-under 137 (66-71), while Shaw is third at 5-under 139.

"The conditions were really tough today, and it was especially windy, but we hung in there," said ETSU head coach Fred Warren. "Both Gareth and Simon (Doherty) played very well, and as a team we were decent overall and still not too far back. Seven strokes off the lead going into the last day still gives us a chance to do well."

Along with Shaw, freshman Simon Doherty (Belfast, Northern Ireland) posted the second best round of any ETSU golfer on Saturday, firing a 2-under 70 to move to 35th on the leaderboard. Meanwhile, fellow freshman Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) is currently tied for 28th following a second round score of 4-over 76.

The Bucs will continue with third and final round action on Sunday. For more on ETSU men's golf and updates following Saturday's second round, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the men's golf link.
