KAUA’I, Hawaii (Nov. 5, 2012) – The ETSU men’s golf team got off to a strong start at the Warrior Wave Intercollegiate on Monday, as the Bucs fired a 2-under-par 286 and are tied for third after first-round play from the Makai Golf Club at the St. Regis Princeville Resort.
Freshman Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) led the Bucs by carding a 4-under-par 68 and is tied for the lead following the opening 18 holes of competition. Meronk recorded three birdies and a pair of bogeys on the front nine, but finished the day with three birdies on the back – including back-to-back birdies on the 255-yard, par-3 13th and the 338-yard, par-4 14th. The Buccaneer rookie is tied with Xavier’s Korey Ward and Amol Mahal from UC Santa Barbara.
The leaders hold a one shot lead over a group of five golfers who opened play at 3-under-par 69 – including 41st-ranked Albin Choi from North Carolina State.
Meanwhile, sophomore Scott Gibson (Southerness, Scotland) and freshman Chris Hickman (Centreville, Md.) are tied for 19th after posting even-par 72 on Monday. Gibson finished the round with consecutive birdies on the 476-yard, par-4 17th and the 567-yard, par-5 18th – and after opening the day with a double bogey on the first hole – Hickman completed the remainder of the round with three birdies and a bogey.
On the team leaderboard, No. 48 Georgia Southern (5-under 283) holds a one shot lead over North Carolina State and is three strokes ahead of ETSU and UC Irvine.
The Bucs are the first group to go out on Tuesday as ETSU tees off at 12:30 p.m. (Eastern). The Blue and Gold are paired with Georgia Southern, North Carolina State, and UC Irvine.
