GREENVILLE, S.C. (March 22, 2013) – Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) paced the ETSU men’s golf team on the opening day of the Furman Intercollegiate as the Buccaneer freshman shot an even-par 72 in the first round at the Furman University Golf Club.
Kristjansson closed out play strong by firing a 3-under on the front nine as the ETSU rookie registered birdies on three of the final five holes to move into a six-way tie for 17th. Meanwhile, sophomore Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) ended the day tied for 23rd after shooting a 1-over 73.
Virginia Tech carded an 8-under 280 on Friday and the Hokies hold a four-shot lead over No. 15 North Florida heading into Saturday’s second round.
On the individual leaderboard, four players hold a share of the lead after wrapping up the day at 4-under 68, while Virginia Tech’s Bryce Chalkley and Iowa State’s Scott Fernandez are one shot off from the leaders.
As a team, ETSU is 15-shots back from the Hokies after totaling a 7-over 295, placing the Blue and Gold in 10th.
The Bucs tee off at noon on Saturday as ETSU will be paired with Purdue and Virginia Tech.
