BRASELTON, Ga. (April 21, 2013) – Sophomore Scott Gibson (Southerness, Scotland) earned a share of the lead by firing a 1-under-par 71 and the ETSU men’s golf team is tied for third following the first round of the Atlantic Sun Championship, which got underway Sunday at The Legends Course of Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga.
Gibson – who was named to the A-Sun All-Freshmen Team after finishing seventh last year at the championship – is in a four-way tie for the lead after carding two birdies on the front nine and posting one bogey on the par-4, 392-yard No. 13th in the opening round. The Buccaneer sophomore is tied with North Florida’s Sean Dale and Kevin Phelan, and Kennesaw State’s Austin Vick. Dale is the second-ranked golfer and Phelan is ranked 48th, according to the Golfstat rankings.
Meanwhile, the Blue and Gold are tied for third with Jacksonville after generating a 13-over-par 301, while No. 17 North Florida is atop the leaderboard at 1-over-par 289. Kennesaw State is second at 10-over 298.
Fellow sophomore Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) is tied for fifth and is one-shot off the lead after completing the first round at even-par 72. Pugh made an outstanding run to close out the day as he was 4-over thru the first 13 holes, but an eagle on the par-5, 520-yard 14th ignited a late charge for the Buccaneer golfer. The reigning A-Sun Golfer of the Week birdied the par-3, 155-yard 15th and the par-4, 452-yard 17th to climb his way up the leaderboard.
Unfortunately, as Gibson and Pugh finished the day in the top-5, the remaining ETSU golfers placed 27th or higher in the opening round. Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) is tied for 27th (+6), Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) is in a four-way tie for 37th (+8), and Chris Hickman (Centreville, Md.) is tied for 43rd at 10-over.
The second round begins at 8 a.m. Monday morning, while the Blue and Gold won’t hit the course until 8:50.
