Pugh, Gibson tied for third

BRASELTON, Ga. (April 22, 2013) – The ETSU men’s golf team remains in third place, while sophomores Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) and Scott Gibson (Southerness, Scotland) are tied for third following Monday’s second-round play at the Atlantic Sun Championship.

The Bucs posted a 14-over-par 302 in the second round and sit 12 shots back of second-place Kennesaw State and 13 strokes off the leader and No. 17 North Florida at The Legends Golf Club in Braselton, Ga. Overall, the Blue and Gold have a two-round total of 27-over 603.

Gibson – who entered the day in a four-way tie for first – dropped into a tie for third with Pugh and North Florida’s MJ Maguire at 3-over-par 147. The trio of golfers enters Tuesday’s final round four shots off the lead.

Gibson held the lead outright at 2-under after posting a birdie at the par-3, 124-yard No. 7, but following his second birdie of the round things began to unravel for the Buccaneer sophomore. In the end, Gibson finished the final 11 holes with one birdie, one double bogey, and four bogeys – including two on the last two holes – to record the 4-over-par 76.

Meanwhile, Pugh couldn’t carry over his stellar run he made late on Sunday into the second round as the Welsh native bogeyed three of his first seven and two of the final four holes on Monday to card a 3-over 75. Sandwiched in between those stretches of bogeys were birdies on the par-5, 521-yard No. 5 and the par-4, 344-yard No. 16.

Kennesaw State’s Austin Vick, one of the four golfers to share the lead following the first 18-holes of play, now sits alone atop the leaderboard at 1-under 143, marking the only player in the field of 50 at under-par. Vick holds a three-stroke lead over UNF’s Kevin Phelan, while Vick’s teammate, Jimmy Beck, made a giant leap up the board as he was the only golfer to finish under-par in the second round. Beck moved up 27 spots to a six-way tie for 10th after firing a 1-under 71 on Monday.

The Owls put pressure on the leading Ospreys in round two. Kennesaw State went low at 5-over-par 293 in the second round and trail UNF by one shot, 590 to 591.  

Freshmen Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) and Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) climbed up the board on Monday. Meronk moved from 27th to 17th, while Kristjansson began the day in a tie for 37th and is now tied at 22nd.  

Tuesday’s final round begins at 8 a.m., with the Bucs taking to the course at 8:50.
