MURRELLS INLET, S.C. (March 11, 2014) – Junior Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) and sophomore Chris Hickman (Centreville, Md.) both posted top-20 finishes as the ETSU men’s golf team wrapped up final round play at the General Hackler Championship on Tuesday afternoon at TPC Myrtle Beach.
Pugh, who entered the day with a one shot lead and was looking to become the third Buccaneer golfer to win the General Hackler, posted a 3-over 75 on Tuesday and finished in fourth-place for the tournament. Overall, Pugh carded a 2-over-par 218 (73-70-75) in the two-day event. Meanwhile, Hickman recorded his second straight 73 and tied for 14th at 7-over-par 223 (77-73-73).
Kent State’s Corey Conners and Coastal Carolina’s Andrew Dorn – who both began the final round one shot back of Pugh – took home a share of the individual title as both golfers shot even-par 216 for the tournament. Conners and Dorn both totaled a 72 on Tuesday.
As a team, ETSU started the final round four strokes back from the leader, but after carding a 13-over 301, the Bucs fell out of contention and placed fourth overall. The Blue and Gold tallied a team score of 32-over-par 896 (303-292-301).
MTSU overcame a one shot deficit and moved past No. 22 Kent State to earn the team championship. The Blue Raiders shot the lowest score of the final round (3-over 291) and edged the Golden Flashes by two strokes, 884 to 886.
The Bucs return to action this weekend as the Blue and Gold gear up for the Seahawk Intercollegiate, which begins Sunday in Wilmington, N.C.
