EUGENE, Ore. (May 16, 2014) – The ETSU men’s golf team made a move on day two of the NCAA Regional as the Bucs jumped into eighth-place at 29-over-par 589 on Friday from the Eugene Country Club.
The Bucs, who entered the day in 11th, moved three spots up the leader board after carding a 13-over 293. ETSU begins Saturday’s final round six shots back of the all-important fifth-place cut line as the top five teams in each regional advance to the NCAA Championships.
ETSU was again led by Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) as the junior fired a 1-over 71 and moved into the top-10. Pugh is one of three golfers tied for seventh at 1-over-par 141 for the tournament after collecting a pair of birdies and bogeys on day two.
Stanford, the fourth-ranked team in the country, holds a firm grip on both the team and individual leader board. The Cardinal shot a 2-over-par 282 on Friday and has a nine-shot lead on second-place and No. 19 Oklahoma at 2-under-par 558. Oregon (No. 44) moved into third at 9-over 569, while 20th-ranked South Carolina is in fourth (19-over 579), and No. 56 North Florida and No. 10 Houston are tied for fifth at 23-over 583.
Patrick Rodgers from Stanford remains in first-place after 36 holes of play as he posted a 3-under 67 and moved to 7-under-par 133 for the tournament. The Cardinal junior golfer has a six-shot lead on Zach Foushee (Oregon), Chris Robb (Chattanooga), and teammate Cameron Wilson.
Sophomore Chris Hickman (Centreville, Md.) posted a solid round on Friday as he recorded an even-par 70, and went from being tied for 54th into a seven-way tie for 24th at 6-over-par 146. Fellow sophomore Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) is tied for 37th and Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) is in 67th.
The Bucs will be paired with Chattanooga and Tennessee in the final round as they tee off Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for the 10th tee box.
