Bucs finish ninth in fall opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (Sept. 15, 2013) – Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) paced the ETSU men’s golf team in its fall opener as the Buccaneer sophomore finished tied for 11th at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, which concluded Sunday afternoon at UNC Finley Golf Course.

Meronk shot an even-par 72 on Sunday and totaled a three-round score of 1-over 217 (72-73-72). Meronk, who tied with North Carolina’s Keagan Cummings, was 1-under thru the first seven holes after posting a birdie on the par-5, 533-yard No. 6, but bogeys on No. 8 and No. 10 moved his score to 1-over in the final round. From there, Meronk moved back to even-par, as he registered his ninth birdie of the weekend at the par-3, 211-yard 12th, and parred the final six holes to finish with the 72.

Georgia Tech led wire-to-wire to claim the team title with a score of 22-under 842 (283-281-278). The Yellow Jackets, who were ranked fourth in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Preseason College Coaches’ Poll, won in dominating fashion as they beat North Carolina State by 20 strokes. The Wolfpack finished second at 2-under-par 862.

The Yellow Jackets also controlled the top of the individual leaderboard as Seth Reeves won by four strokes over teammate Richy Werenski. Reeves entered the final round with a one-shot lead over Werenski, but after carding a 2-under on Sunday, the red-shirt senior won the tournament with a score of 8-under 208 (69-69-70 – 208). Meanwhile, Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans placed third at 3-under 213 and another Yellow Jacket, Anders Albertson, was one of three golfers to tie for fourth at 2-under 214.

Overall, ETSU finished ninth in the 14-team field as the Blue and Gold totaled a score of 24-over 888 (295-292-301).

Duke, who won the 2012 Tar Heel Intercollegiate, finished in a tie for sixth with East Carolina. The 15th-ranked Blue Devils tallied an 18-over-par 882 (288-295-299) on the weekend.

The Bucs return to action in two weeks when ETSU heads to Columbus, Ohio for the Jack Nicklaus Invitational, beginning Sunday, Sept. 29.
