COLUMBUS, Ohio (Sept. 30, 2013) – The ETSU men’s golf team placed seventh, while junior Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) posted a top-10 finish as the Buccaneers wrapped up play at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational Monday afternoon at The Ohio State University Golf Club’s Scarlet Course.

Pugh fired a 1-over 72 in the final round and finished ninth with a three round score of 2-over-par 215 (69-74-72). The Buccaneer golfer got off to a slow start on Monday as he registered back-to-back bogeys on No. 10 and 11, but he responded with birdies on the par-5, 562-yard 12th and the par-4, 435 No. 1 to move back to even for the round. However, the Welshman carded a five on his final hole of the afternoon (par-4, 427-yard No. 9), moving him back to 1-over for the round.

California swept both the team and individual titles as the fifth-ranked Golden Bears pulled away from the field and Brandon Hagy held on to defeat Kent State’s Taylor Pendrith. Cal won the tournament by 19 strokes as the Golden Bears were the only team to finish below par at 10-under 842 (281-280-281). Oklahoma finished second as the 10th-ranked Sooners totaled a three round score of 9-over 861 (291-282-288), while No. 6-ranked Oklahoma State placed third at 11-over 863 (292-285-286).

Hagy entered the final round with a one shot lead, and did just enough to pull off the win as he edged out Pendrith by a stroke, 207 to 208. Hagy shot a 2-under 69 on Monday, while Pendrith – who began the day two shots back of the Cal senior – put up a 3-under 68 to move from fourth to second. Oklahoma State’s Wyndham Clark fired the lowest score of the tournament as he posted a 5-under 66 on Monday, moving him into a tie for fourth with teammate Ian Davis.

The Bucs were 12-over on Monday and finished with a team score of 895 (295-304-296) for the tournament. ETSU ended four shots back of Mississippi State for sixth, but the Bucs were four shots better than the host Buckeyes.

ETSU returns to action on Monday, Oct. 7, when the Blue and Gold head to Raleigh, N.C., for the Wolfpack Intercollegiate.
