SPARTANBURG, S.C. (March 18, 2015) – Coming off his first collegiate win at last weekend’s Seminole Intercollegiate, ETSU junior Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) was named Southern Conference Golfer of the Week, which was announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Kristjansson was the wire-to-wire winner at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla., over the weekend, as the Reykjavik, Iceland, native shot a blistering 17-under 199 to best the 90-player field for his first collegiate win. Kristjansson turned in 17 birdies and an eagle on the weekend, beating seven golfers ranked in the top 50 nationally. He finished three strokes ahead of No. 22 Jack Maguire of tournament host Florida State and four ahead of No. 11 Will Starke of South Carolina.
Kristjansson opened his weekend with a 9-under 63 on Friday, tying the lowest round in school history – set by Rhys Davies in 2005 – and opening up a four-stroke lead over the field. He followed that up with a bogey-free 5-under 67 on Saturday to expand his lead to seven strokes before firing a 3-under 69 Sunday to close out the win.
Kristjansson’s effort helped the Bucs to a second-place finish at the tournament, which included 17 teams. ETSU, which entered the tournament ranked 41st nationally, was one of nine ranked squads in the field. The Bucs finished behind only No. 2 Florida State, which rallied six spots in the standings with a 17-under 271 on the final day. The Bucs, who led the first two rounds, finished the tournament with an 18-under total of 846 (276-288-282) and finished one stroke ahead of No. 8 South Carolina, two ahead of No. 7 Georgia Tech and 13 ahead of No. 9 South Florida.
This marks the first-ever weekly honor for Kristjansson.
The Bucs return to action at the Mason Rudolph Championship, which will be held April 3-5 in Franklin, Tenn.
