Bucs coming off wire-to-wire win at Greenbrier Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 15, 2016) – After earning a wire-to-wire win earlier in the week at the Greenbrier Invitational, the ETSU men’s golf team eyes its second straight win as they begin play at the Wolfpack Spring Intercollegiate on Saturday at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course.  


ETSU recorded its first team win of the season as the Bucs defended their title at the Greenbrier Invitational by 15 strokes on Tuesday afternoon at The Old White TPC Course … As a team, the Blue and Gold finished with a score of 6-over-par 846 (282-285-279), while Eastern Kentucky earned runner-up honors at 21-over-par 861. 

The Blue and Gold won the 2015 Greenbrier Invitational by one stroke over EKU … ETSU went on to win its next tournament by capturing the 2015 Southern Conference Championship at Pinehurst. 

With the win, ETSU has won at least one tournament in each of the last four years and 10 of the last 12 seasons … Overall, the Bucs have now won 52 tournaments under the watch of head coach Fred Warren. 

Senior Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) – who was named to his second straight Palmer Cup team earlier on Friday – earned runner-up honors after finishing with a 54-hole score of 1-under-par 209 (67-74-68) … Meronk, the 21st-ranked golfer via Golfstat, has now finished in the top 10 in eight of his last nine tournaments, while placing in the top-3 in three of his last four events. 

Senior Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) led after 36 holes on Monday and finished tied for third at even-par 210 (70-68-72), while freshman Geuntae Kim (Daegu, South Korea) and sophomore Cayman Ratliff (Kingsport, Tenn.) both recorded their best collegiate finishes … Kim tied for ninth at 4-over-par 214 (71-72-71) and Ratliff tied for 15 at 5-over-par 215 (74-71-70). 


The Wolfpack Spring Intercollegiate begins Saturday morning with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m., while Sunday’s final round will have groups starting from No. 1 and No. 10 at 8 a.m. … The teams will play 36 holes on Saturday and the final 18 holes on Sunday. 

The lowest four scores from a five-member team count toward the team totals. 

The Lonnie Poole Golf Course is a par-71, 7,358-yard layout … Lonnie Poole Golf Course hosted the 2014 NCAA Men's Regional and the 2015 NCAA Women's Regional and will be home to the 2018 NCAA Men's Regional. 

NC State, the tournament host, is the defending champion as the Wolfpack won by 17 shots over Maryland … Senior David Cooke earned medalist honors after shooting a 10-under-par 132 in the weather-shortened tournament. 

ETSU’s last visit to the Lonnie Poole Golf Course saw Adrian Meronk earn medalist honors at the 2014 Wolfpack Intercollegiate … Overall, the Bucs earned runner-up honors at that event.

ETSU’s lineup this weekend features Meronk, Kristjansson, Kim, Ratliff and Mateusz Gradecki (Oborniki Slaskie, Poland)

The Buccaneer lineup features two seniors, one junior, one sophomore and one freshman. 

ETSU is grouped with NC State and Pennsylvania on Saturday. The groups tee off from holes 1-thru-3 beginning at 8:45 a.m.
