ETSU freshman finishes tied for 18th in first collegiate tournament

DURHAM, N.C. (Sept. 11, 2016) – Playing in his first collegiate tournament, freshman Ben Reichert (East Amherst, N.Y.) led the ETSU men’s golf team as he finished tied for 18th at the Rod Myers Invitational, which concluded Sunday afternoon at the Duke University Golf Club. 

Reichert – who played the final 36 holes at 1-under-par – posted an even-par 72 on Sunday, and wrapped up the weekend with a 54-hole score of 1-over-par 217 (74-71-72). The East Amherst, N.Y. native, totaled two birdies, 14 pars and two bogeys his final round, while he led the Blue and Gold with 37 pars for the tournament. 

Senior Mateusz Gradecki (Oborniki Slaskie, Poland) paced the Bucs on Sunday as he carded a 2-under 70 en route to finishing tied for 23rd at 2-over-par 218 (72-76-70). 

Liberty’s Kieran Vincent earned medalist honors as he registered three straight rounds of 5-under 67 to finish the tournament at 15-under-201. Wake Forest’s Will Zalatoris and Florida State’s Cristobal Del Solar tied for second at 9-under-par 207. Del Solar went low on Sunday as he shot a 6-under 66. 

Wake Forest defended its title as the Demon Deacons finished at 23-under-par 841 (278-280-283), and won by 11 shots over Liberty and 13 strokes over Florida State. 

ETSU – playing with four freshmen and one senior this weekend – placed eighth at 18-over-par 882 (292-299-291). 

Freshman Kevin Burns (Canton, Ga.) recorded his first collegiate eagle on Sunday as he carded a three on the par-5, 493-yard No. 9 and finished tied for 49th, while fellow freshman Zack Ford (Cochranton, Pa.) finished tied for 58th. Red-shirt freshman Trevor Hulbert (Orlando, Fla.) gave the Bucs a countable score on Sunday as he shot a 1-over 73. Hulbert was 2-under thru 11 holes, but posted a triple-bogey on the par-3, 181-yard No. 12, moving him to 1-over for the round. 

The Bucs return to action on Oct. 1 when ETSU heads to New Haven, Conn., to play in the Macdonald Cup.
