ETSU gears up for General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 9, 2018) – After making its spring season debut two weeks ago out west, the ETSU men’s golf team now makes the trek to the east coast as the Buccaneers gear up for the General Hackler Championship, which begins Saturday morning at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club.


The Bucs finished tied for eighth in their spring opener at The Prestige at PGA West back on Feb. 21 … ETSU tied with then-No. 18 Southern Cal, while finishing ahead of No. 38 San Diego State, No. 61 Notre Dame and No. 72 Washington.

Junior Geuntae Kim (Daegu, South Korea) led the Blue and Gold as he finished tied for 18th at 2-over-par 144, while freshman Jack Rhea (Jonesborough, Tenn.) placed tied for 21st at 3-over-par 145.

Freshman Shiso Go (Kanagawa, Japan) leads ETSU with a 72.76 scoring average, while Rhea is right behind his counterpart at 72.82.


The teams are scheduled to play 36 holes on Saturday (Mar. 10) and 18 final holes on Sunday (Mar. 11) at the par-72, 7,233-yard Dunes Club, which is annually ranked among the top 10 courses in South Carolina.

The teams will play 36 holes of continuous play beginning with a shotgun start Saturday at 8:30 a.m. On Sunday, teams will tee off from No. 1 and No. 10 starting at 8:30 a.m.

ETSU won the 2006 and 2010 General Hackler Championship team titles, while former Buccaneer All-American Rhys Davies holds the tournament record at 10-under-par 206, set in 2007. Davies also won in 2005, while Olympian and PGA Tour player Seamus Power earned medalist honors at this tournament in 2010. 

Wake Forest won the 2017 championship but the Demon Deacons will not be returning to defend their title.

The General Hackler Championship is hosted by Coastal Carolina.


Joining ETSU in this year’s field are Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Kent State, Kentucky, Liberty, LSU, NC State, North Florida, Princeton, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Virginia, and Virginia Tech.

The field features eight teams ranked in the top-50 of either the Golfstat or Golfweek Rankings, including #2 Texas A&M, #8 Georgia Tech, #11 LSU, #23 North Florida, #26 South Carolina, #31 NC State (Golfstat), #31 Kent State (Golfweek) and #38 Kentucky.

Individually, five golfers are ranked in the top-50, including three in the top-25.


ETSU’s lineup this week includes No. 1 Geuntae Kim, No. 2 Jack Rhea, No. 3 Shiso Go, No. 4 Austin Carter and No. 5 Trevor Hulbert.  

The Bucs’ lineup features one junior, one sophomore and three freshmen.

Senior Cayman Ratliff (Kingsport, Tenn.) will play as an individual.
