STATESBORO, Ga. (March 16, 2018) – Junior Geuntae Kim (Daegu, South Korea) and sophomore Trevor Hulbert (Orlando, Fla.) led the ETSU men’s golf team in the opening round of the Schenkel Invitational on Friday at Forest Heights Country Club.
Kim sits in a five-way tie for 11th after firing a 2-under-par 70, while Hulbert posted an even-par 72 to move into a tie for 22nd. Kim collected four birdies, 12 pars and two bogeys in his round, while three of the birdies came via a seven-hole stretch over holes 13 thru 18. Hulbert – who began his round with seven straight pars – recorded two birdies, 14 pars and two bogeys on the day.
Kim is four shots off the lead as Vanderbilt’s Theo Humphrey is in first-place at 6-under-par 66. Georgia Southern’s Archer Price and Vanderbilt’s Will Gordon are tied for second at 5-under-par 67, and a group of three golfers are tied for fourth at 4-under 68.
As a team, the Bucs shot a 2-over-par 290 and sit in tenth-place.
Vanderbilt sits atop the team leaderboard after round one as the third-ranked Commodores fired a 14-under-par 274 and carry a nine-shot lead into Saturday’s second round. Kentucky is in second with the 30th-ranked Wildcats posting a 5-under-par 283 on Friday, while Mississippi State is in third at 2-under-par 285.
ETSU’s other two countable scores came from sophomore Kevin Burns (Canton, Ga.) and freshman Shiso Go (Kanagawa, Japan). Burns is tied for 35th at 1-over-par 73, while Go is tied for 58th at 3-over-par 75.
The Bucs will tee off at 8:51 a.m. in Saturday’s second round from No. 10. ETSU is paired for Florida and Iowa.
