SPARTANBURG, S.C. (April 8, 2018) –The ETSU men’s golf team begins its stretch run towards this month’s Southern Conference Championship as the Buccaneers head to Spartanburg for the Wofford Invitational, which gets underway Monday morning at the Country Club Spartanburg.
ABOUT THE BUCS
After the Wofford Invitational, the Bucs will have one more tune-up prior to defending their title at the SoCon Championship, which will be held April 22-24 in Pinehurst, N.C.
Freshman Shiso Go (Kanagawa, Japan)is coming off a strong showing last time out as he finished tied for 17th at 2-under-par 214 (75-69-70) at the Schenkel Invitational, marking his highest collegiate finish … Go played the final 36 holes at 5-under-par.
Go has the second-lowest scoring average among SoCon players at 72.61 … Go’s mark also tops all SoCon freshmen.
ETSU is the only team in the SoCon to have five players ranked in the top-16 in scoring average … Junior Geuntae Kim (Daegu, South Korea)and sophomore Kevin Burns (Canton, Ga.)ranked 11th and 12th, while freshman Jack Rhea (Jonesborough, Tenn.)and sophomore Trevor Hulbert (Orlando, Fla.)are 15th and 16th, respectively.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT
The Wofford Invitational will be contested on Monday and Tuesday at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and will conclude the tournament with the final round on Tuesday … Each day will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start.
The Country Club of Spartanburg is par-72, 6,648-yards.
This marks the 30th annual tournament, which began in 1988.
ETSU has won this tournament three times as the Bucs won back-to-back tournaments in 2010-11 and again in 2013 … Michael Stewart(2010) and Garrett Willis(1996) have both earned medalist honors at this tournament.
This marks the Bucs’ first tournament in the appearance since claiming their 2013 title.
The Bucs and Wofford are joined by Charleston Southern, Presbyterian, Francis Marion, Austin Peay, Army, Longwood and Appalachian State.
ETSU’s lineup this week includes Shiso Go, Trevor Hulbert, Geuntae Kim, Jack Rhea and Austin Carter … Cayman Ratliff (Kingsport, Tenn.)will play as an individual.
The Bucs’ lineup features one junior, one sophomores and three freshmen.
First round pairings have yet to be determined.
