Buccaneer senior fires 3-under 69 on day one from Lakeside Course

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (Oct. 19, 2018) -- Geuntae Kim (Daegu, South Korea) led the ETSU men’s golf team on the opening day of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate, as the Buccaneer senior fired a 3-under-par 69 on Friday afternoon on the Lakeside Course. 

Kim, who helped lead the Blue and Gold to the team win last weekend at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, totaled four birdies, 13 pars and one bogey en route to sitting tied for 11th in the 75-player field, which features four players ranked in the top 10 and 11 in the top 25. Kim began play on the back nine on Friday where he totaled two birdies and seven pars before making the turn. From there, the Daegu, South Korea native birdied the par-5, 542-yard No. 1 and the par-4, 353-yard No. 8 to finish with the 69. 

Kim enters round two just four shots off the lead as Georgia Tech’s Noah Norton carded a 7-under 65 to take a one-shot lead over teammate and No. 20 Luke Schniederjans and Wake Forest’s Eugenio Chacarra. A group of three golfers posted a 5-under 67, while a group of four players are tied for seventh at 4-under 68. 

Tournament host and third-ranked Georgia Tech also holds the team lead after day one as the Yellow Jackets totaled an 18-under-par 270. Georgia Tech leads No. 11 Wake Forest and No. 15 Clemson by six shots, while No. 10 Southern California is eight strokes back at 10-under-par 278 and No. 2 Duke, No. 5 Alabama, No. 9 Texas A&M and No. 32 Florida State are all tied for fifth at 2-under-par 286. 

As a team, the Bucs are 13th at 14-under-par 302. 

Sophomore Shiso Go(Kanagawa, Japan), coming off his runner-up finish at last weekend’s home tournament at Blackthorn Club, is tied for 55th at 4-over 76, while fellow sophomore Jack Rhea (Jonesborough, Tenn.) and junior Trevor Hulbert (Orlando, Fla.) also turned in countable scores for the Blue and Gold. Hulbert is tied for 63rd (+6) and Rhea is tied for 67th (+7). 

Second round play gets underway Saturday morning at 8:30, with ETSU going out at 9:55 from No. 10.
