Former Buccaneer qualifies for first-ever major championship

LA JOLLA, Calif. (June 8, 2021) – For the first time in his professional career, former ETSU Men’s Golfer Adrian Meronk will compete in a major championship on the PGA Tour. Meronk will take part in the 121st edition of the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif. from June 17-20 and is the first Poland native to compete in the historic event. Meronk is the first Buccaneer alum to qualify for a major championship since Rhys Enoch qualified for the 2019 U.S. Open. Enoch made the cut and finished 71st in the field at Pebble Beach.

“It’s a great feeling to qualify for the U.S. Open and be the first Polish player in the tournament’s history,” stated Meronk. “I am proud of myself and thankful to my team. I feel like my game is trending in the right direction. I’m super excited to be competing against the best players in the world.”

Meronk was able to qualify due to the aggregate Race to Dubai points that the European Tour offered over the previous three tournaments: Betfred British Masters hosted by Danny Willett (May 12-15), Made in HimmerLand presented by FREJA (May 27-30) and the Porsche European Open (June 3-6). The Top-10 points earners between the three events earned a place in the U.S. Open. Meronk finished sixth in the points standings with 213.05 points, thanks in large part to a T-3rd finish at the Betfred British Masters.

Meronk has competed in 10 events on the European Tour this season, posting three Top-25 finishes. The Poland product finished third at the Betfred British Masters on May 14 in Sutton Coldfield, England and the Tenerife Open on May 1 in Tenerife, Spain.

Meronk played for ETSU from 2012-2016 under former head coach Fred Warren. Meronk was a four-time all-conference golfer and a two-time PING All-American (2015 & 2016). The former Buccaneer was a two-time SoCon Player of the Year and claimed the 2016 SoCon Championship Medalist honors. Meronk ranks second in ETSU history in career wins (5) and career rounds of par or better (82).

Meronk has been dubbed the Polish Tiger Woods by Golf Magazine and became the first-ever Pole to win on the European Tour at the 57th Open de Portugal. The win gave Meronk his official European Tour Card, the first Polish golfer to earn the European Tour card.

The 2021 U.S. Open will be held at Torrey Pines, beginning next Thursday, June 17.
