Bucs looking to start season on strong note

HARTFORD, Wisc. (Sept. 4, 2021) – Fresh off a Southern Conference Championship and the program’s first NCAA Championship birth since 2008, the ETSU Men’s Golf team is looking to start the season off right with a strong performance in the season opener at Erin Hills Golf Course this weekend. The Bucs will be one of 17 teams in the field this weekend at the Marquette Intercollegiate in Hartford, Wisc.

Meet the Bucs
The season-opening tournament for the Bucs will feature a duo of returners for the Blue & Gold. The Bucs will be led by reigning Southern Conference Freshman/Player of the Year Archie Davies (Carlisle, England). The redshirt-sophomore is coming off a season in which he aided the Bucs in capturing the SoCon title after winning his first individual medalist honors. The England native carded 72.2 strokes per round, finishing inside the Top 10 on five occasions. Returning alongside Davies is sophomore Ben Carberry (Bonnybridge, Scotland). Carberry competed in four tournaments on the season, averaging 75.3 strokes per round.

The Buccaneer duo will be joined by newcomers: Jack Tickle (Bristol, Tenn.), Mats Ege (Kristiansand, Norway) and Algot Kleen (Fiskebackskil, Sweden). Ege transfers to Johnson City from Cal State Northridge, while Tickle and Kleen are true freshmen, making their collegiate debuts.

About the Tournament
The 54-hole event will feature 18 holes of play on Sunday-Tuesday with tee times beginning at 10:00 a.m. (ET) with all competitors starting on split tees on hole No. 1 and No. 10.

Erin Hills, home of the 2017 U.S. Open, will play as a par-72 and play at 7,334 yards in distance.

There will be six different groups consisting of three teams per group (including Marquette individual golfers). ETSU will be playing alongside Minnesota and Kansas with the No. 5 golfer teeing off first and No. 1 being the last to tee it up.

The Field
The field features 17 teams, including seven squads that are ranked inside the Top-50 in the most recent Golfstat rankings (June 4). Texas A&M enters as the highest-ranked team coming in at No. 13, followed by Liberty at No. 24 and Notre Dame at No. 31. The Blue & Gold find themselves sitting in 39th in the latest rankings. The remaining ranked teams include Iowa (No. 40), South Florida (No. 45) and Ohio State (No. 49).

Davies is the highest-ranked Buccaneer in the field, ranked No. 89 in the June 4th rankings. Ahead of the England native are Kieran Vincent of Liberty (No. 36), Albin Bergstrom of South Florida (No. 46) and Mac McClear of Iowa (No. 68).

ETSU’s Lineup
ETSU will use the lineup of 1) Archie Davies; 2) Jack Tickle; 3) Mats Ege; 4) Algot Kleen; and 5) Ben Carberry.

The Bucs will begin on hole No. 1 in the opening round, teeing off at 10:50 a.m. (ET).
