JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 18, 2014) - ETSU and league-leading Wofford played to a 3-3 draw Saturday night inside Summers-Taylor Stadium, as the Bucs capped an unbeaten week of SoCon play.
The start of Saturday's match nearly mirrored the start of ETSU and Wofford's previous matchup this season. Earlier this season, on Sept. 30, ETSU and Wofford combined to score three goals in the opening 16 minutes of play en route to a 4-3 Wofford win. This time, the two teams combined to score three times in the first 21 minutes of action.
Redshirt sophomore Joao Ramalho (Monte Santo, Brazil) gave the Buccaneers (6-6-1, 2-3-1) an early 1-0 lead off an assist from William Nordenstrom (Linkoping, Sweden). Ramalho's fifth-minute goal was his ninth score of the season.
The Terriers (8-4-1, 4-1-1) responded with a 12th-minute score; however, ETSU recaptured the lead with a 21st-minute goal by senior Anthony Wojas (Auxerre, France).
The Bucs carried a 2-1 advantage into intermission.
Following halftime, the Terriers scored two unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead; however, ETSU redshirt sophomore Warren Austin (Kingsport, Tenn.) netted an equalizer for the Bucs, launching a kick from nearly 40 yards out to beat Wofford keeper Garrett Closs. Austin's 81st-minute score came just 46 seconds after Wofford's go-ahead goal by Nestor Jaramillo.
Ramalho, the Bucs leading goal scorer, nearly gave ETSU the lead on a deceptively curving shot off a free kick that sailed just above the top right corner.
Wofford outshot ETSU, 30-13, overall and, 6-1, in the second overtime period; however, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Daniel Adelman (Johnson City, Tenn.) made a pair of acrobatic saves in the 101st and 110th minutes to keep the 3-3 tie in tact.
With Saturday's result versus Wofford, ETSU capped an unbeaten week of SoCon play against two perennial league powers: Wofford and Furman. Wednesday, ETSU knocked off Furman, 1-0, in Johnson City.
The Bucs will continue conference action Tuesday, Oct. 21 as ETSU visits VMI at 4:00 p.m.
