SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Oct. 4, 2016) – For the second time in three weeks, ETSU men’s soccer goalkeeper Jonny Sutherland (Chester, U.K.) was named SoCon Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 26-Oct. 2, which was announced by the league office Tuesday.

The sophomore goalkeeper has pitched five shutouts this season – which matches last year’s total. With ten career shutouts, his career goals against average is 1.11 in his second year at ETSU. In the week, Sutherland pitched a pair of shutouts against then No. 25 Furman and Mercer.

In the month of September, the Chester, U.K. native has been unstoppable. With 587:28 minutes between the bars, he has made 23 saves, tallied a .920 save percentage and allowed just two goals – both scored in overtime to then No. 22 West Virginia and in double overtime to Kentucky. He has also tallied four shutouts over then No. 1 North Carolina, Appalachian State, UNC Asheville and Furman.

This season Sutherland is first in shutouts (5), second in goals against average (0.94), and second in save percentage (.763) in the SoCon. He has been the backbone for the ETSU defense which has resulted in no opposing goals being scored in 609 minutes of regulation - which dates back to Aug. 31 against George Mason.

The ETSU men’s soccer team will continue its SoCon schedule with a road match tonight at Wofford. The match at Snyder Field is set for 7 p.m.
