SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Jan. 15, 2019) – The Southern Conference announced its Fall Academic All-Conference team Tuesday, as 51 ETSU student-athletes earned the academic honor for 2018.
The Bucs led all SoCon schools with their 51 selections, followed by Mercer with 45 and Western Carolina with 41. A total of 354 student athletes from the conference earned recognition — a fall record for the SoCon.
The ETSU women’s soccer team led the way with 16 selections, followed by men’s and women’s cross country with 13, football with 11, men’s soccer with seven and volleyball with four.
ETSU football’s senior linebacker Austin Gatewood (Ooltewah, Tenn.), who completed his final season for the Bucs this fall, earned special recognition as one of 19 athletes in the SoCon with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average at the conclusion of the fall semester and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.
