Sauro to assist with ETSU’s goalkeepers

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 28, 2019) -- East Tennessee State University men’s soccer head coach David Casper announced on Friday that Cameron Sauro has accepted a position to be the Buccaneers’ assistant coach. Sauro will primarily work with ETSU’s goalkeepers.

Sauro, who played collegiately at King University, has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Southwest Minnesota State University.

“I am very excited to add Cam to our staff. He is a young and energetic coach who is very hungry to learn and grow in his position,” said Casper. “His years of playing in goal as well as coaching goalkeepers will help take our program to another level.  He will be coaching the goalkeepers on a daily basis as well as contributing to many other aspects of the program.”

During his time at SMSU, Sauro was heavily involved in all aspects of the program including running training sessions, recruiting, logistics, academics affairs and social media. Sauro was instrumental in helping SMSU improve its win total by three wins from the 2017 season to 2018, while actively helping recruit and sign 12 players for the fall of 2019. As head of academic affairs, Sauro also helped the team achieve a GPA of 3.55 for the 2018 fall semester.

“First, I'd like to thank Erin Kasmarik-Mallett and Chris Hmielewski for everything they've done for me the past two years at SMSU,” said Sauro. “I couldn't be more excited for the opportunity to join a program as prestigious as East Tennessee State. I'm grateful to Scott Carter, David Casper and Josh Scott for believing in me and allowing me to be a part of the Buccaneer family. I look forward to building on the program’s success.”

Prior to SMSU, Sauro served as the goalkeeper coach at The 705 Academy in Alliston, Ontario, Canada. Sauro also served as an assistant U12 soccer coach at Barrie SC in Barrie, Ontario, Canada.

Sauro began his coaching career as a goalkeeper coach during youth camps at King. While attending King, Sauro was a four-year standout and a team captain for his final two seasons. Sauro was a two-time academic all-conference selection and held a 1.72 GAA in 27 career games with 74 saves.

Sauro holds a USSF 'D' as well as a USC GK 'II' License.
