The David Lilly Era Begins for ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 24, 2022) – The ETSU men’s soccer team opens its 2022 season at home in a Thursday evening matchup against Longwood. With a 6 p.m. kickoff inside Summers-Taylor Stadium, this will be the second consecutive season the two teams open their season against one another. The season opener comes after two preseason exhibition wins, which included games against King University and Elon University.

  • Former ETSU assistant coach and Milligan head coach, David Lilly, begins his tenure as head coach for the Blue and Gold.
  • After scoring the second most goals in program history, junior forward Tarik Pannholzer (Flensburg, Germany) returns for the Bucs for the new campaign.
  • After losing nine players from a season ago, the coaching staff has added 11 new faces, with five of them being freshmen.
  • The Bucs finished with an overall record of 4-8-3 with a conference record of 1-3-2, which resulted in a fifth-place finish in the Southern Conference standings.
  • As a staple in the defense, Dominic Foster (London, England) and Josh Hancock (Torbay, England) return for the Bucs with over 60 games played of experience combined.


  • Longwood is coached by Jon Atkinson, who is entering his 18th season as head coach for the Lancers.
  • The Lancers posted a 6-10-2 overall record and a 4-3-1 conference which resulted in a third-place finish in the 2021 Big South standings.
  • A part of their returning core includes leading goal scorer and assist man, Markus Gronli.
  • After returning 21 of the 38 players from a season ago, the Lancers have added some experience with the addition of 16 new players with only four being freshmen.


  • ETSU holds a 1-0 series record over Longwood.
  • Thursday evening will be the first time the Lancers travel to Johnson City, Tenn.
  • Their only other matchup came a year ago in last season’s opener, which was played in Farmville, Va.
  • The Bucs won the last matchup in a game that finished 1-0.
