JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- For the second consecutive week, both the Southern Conference men's and women's tennis Players-of-the-Week are from East Tennessee State. Junior Gustavo Gomez (Balcarce, Argentina) and senior Megan Edwards (Alpharetta, Ga.) were honored today by the Southern Conference.
Gomez won all three of his singles matches last week, leading the Bucs to three Southern Conference wins. He defeated James Cameron (Furman), Jason Ontog (Chattanooga) and Kendall Swartz (Georgia Southern) all in straight sets.
The Bucs regular No. 1 singles players, Gomez has compiled a 25-10 singles mark this season. He has won his last six matches and currently stands in ninth place on ETSU's All-Time Career Singles Win Chart with 87 collegiate victories.
ETSU (16-7, 8-0 Southern Conference) has won its last 20 matches against teams in the Southern Conference and can earn at least a tie for the Southern Conference Championship with a win today against UNC Greensboro.
Edwards led the women's team to two Southern Conference victories this week. Edwards defeated Peita Horley (Chattanooga) and Jennifer Runnion (Georgia Southern) at No. 4 singles. She is 13-8 this season in singles, 8-4 at No. 4.
Edwards and teammate Paty Vega have combined for a 13-6 doubles record this season. They won both of their contests this weekend at No. 2 doubles.
The men's team will host UNC Greensboro at 2:30 p.m. today and will complete their regular season at 2 p.m. on April 20 at College of Charleston. The women's team (12-4, 6-1 Southern Conference) returns to action on April 21 at UNC Greensboro before returning home to face Wofford in the regular-season finale on April 22.
