Tennis Sweeps Southern Conference Awards

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- ETSU sophomores Roberto Fernandez (Cuernavaca, Mexico) and Mami Inoue (Kobe City, Japan) both earned Southern Conference Tennis Player-of-the-Week honors for the week of April 3-10.

Fernandez went 4-0 this week to lead the Bucs (13-7, 5-0 Southern Conference) in two Conference wins -- versus Appalachian State and The Citadel. Fernandez is 19-9 this season and is enjoying a season-long nine-match win streak.

Fernandez began the week with win's over Mike Berger (Wake Forest) at No. 3 singles and Jacob Nordwell (UNC Charlotte) at No. 2 singles. Because of an injury to Gustavo Gomez, Fernandez played at No. 1 singles and won two Southern Conference matches -- against Dan Holman (Appalachian State) and Eddie Almada (The Citadel) -- on April 9.

Inoue led the women's team (10-4, 4-1 Southern Conference) to a 3-1 record this week by winning all four matches at No. 2 singles. She is 16-6 this season and is also enjoying a nine-match win streak.

In the week's first match, Inoue was the only singles winner in the Bucs' 7-2 loss to Furman (April 4). She defeated Mary Quigley (UNC Charlotte), Elizabeth Moreno (Davidson) and Shelby Fitzpatrick (Western Carolina) to finish her perfect week. Inoue teamed with Rica Iida to go 2-1 in doubles matches.

Both the men's and women's teams will host Southern Conference matches this weekend. On Saturday, Arpil 15 the women's squad will host Chattanooga at 10 a.m., while the men's team hosts the Mocs at 2 p.m. On Sunday, April 16, the women's team plays Georgia Southern at 10 a.m., followed by the men's squad hosting the Eagles at 2 p.m.
