Tennis Places Three on All-Southern Conference Teams

Johnson City, Tenn. -- East Tennessee State's Gustavo Gomez, Juan Yannuzzi and Paty Vega were named to the All-Southern Conference tennis teams today.

Gomez, a senior from Balcarce, Argentina went 9-1 in SoCon play this past spring. He had an amazing streak of 23 consecutive wins broken by Chattanooga's John Ontog. Ontog was named the Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year. This marks the fourth time that Gomez has been named an All-SoCon selection. Gomez currently holds a record of 25-10.

Juan Yannuzzi, a senior from Mar del Plata, Argentina, has won 19 of his past 20 matches and completed the Southern Conference with a perfect 10-0 record. This is also the fourth time that Yannuzzi has received All-SoCon accolades. In the previous four year's Yannuzzi currently has a record of 40-1 against Southern Conference opponents.

Paty Vega, a senior from Mexico City, Mexico, was named to the All-SoCon team for the third time. Vega won all confernce honors in the 1997-98 season as well as the 1999-2000 campaign. Vega won the Louisville Invitational in the Flight A singles.

The ETSU men's tennis team faces the winner of the Appalachian State/VMI match on Friday, April 20 at 2:30 p.m. The ETSU women's tennis team will face No.3 seeded UNC Greensboro on Friday, April 20 at 1:00 p.m. The 2001 Southern Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Championships are held in Charleston, S.C., April 19-22, and is hosted by The Citadel.
