Johnson City, Tenn.-- Chattanooga freshman James Dickerson won the biggest match of his career Saturday to lead the Mocs to a 4-3 Southern Conference victory over East Tennessee State.
Dickerson, who entered the match with a 2-3 record in league competition, outlast Francisco Diaz 7-6,1-6,6-4 to clinch the win.
The Mocs, 11-8 and 7-3 in league play, won two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. UTC also picked up singles wins at No. 1 and No. 5. Sophomore Jason Ontog completed a clean sweep within the SoCon, defeating Gustavo Gomez 2-6, 6-2,6-3 at No.1. Ontog finishes league play 10-0 after beating Gomez, last year's SoCon Player of the Year.
Fabian Bechara also won for the Mocs with a 7-6,7-6 win over Roberto Fernandez at No. 5. The Buccaneers, 11-11, 7-2, earned singles wins at No. 2,3 and 4. Marcos Pavlovich defeated Jesse Koti 6-3,7-6 at No. 2, Juan Yannuzzi beat John Hangstefer 6-3,6-3 at No. 3 and Pablos Sahagun defeated Fungai Munjanja 2-6,7-6,6-2 at No. 4. The Bucs will travel to Charleston, S.C. this weekend to take part in the Southern Conference Championships. The tournament will be hosted by The Citadel.
