Johnson City, Tenn. -- East Tennessee State handed conference rival, and 61st ranked Furman, a 5-2 loss in men's tennis action this afternoon from the ETSU Tennis Center.
After dropping all three doubles matches, the Bucs stormed back by taking five of the six singles matches to secure the win. Senior Gustavo Gomez, playing at No. 1 singles, won his 22nd consecutive match by downing Furman's Lee Nickell 6-1,6-0. Marcos Pavlovich also posted a victory at No. 2 singles by defeating James Cameron 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. At No. 3 singles, Juan Yannuzzi continued his impressive streak of winning 17 of his previous 18 matches by coming back from a 5-3 first-set deficit to defeat John Chesworth in straight sets, 7-6,6-2. Yannuzzi also ran his career Southern Conference record to an astounding 39-1. No. 4 singles saw Pablo Sahagun take a 6-4, 6-1 win over Patrick Gaughan. The final singles win of the afternoon saw Roberto Fernandez down Chris Henderson 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in No. 5 singles. Furman's lone singles victory saw Eric Ward defeat Francisco Diaz 6-2,6-2.
"This is a good win for us," said ETSU head men's tennis coach Dave Mullins. "We were solid at singles this afternoon. After we dropped the doubles matches, we came back and I am extremely proud of our guys."
With the win, the Bucs evened their overall record to 10-10 on the season, 7-1 in the Southern Conference. The loss drops Furman to 13-9 on the season, 7-1 in the Southern Conference.
The Bucs will be in action Friday, April 13, as it hosts conference foe Davidson in the final home match of the season from the ETSU Tennis Center.
