Johnson City, Tenn.-- The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles took the final two doubles matches to win the doubles point and secure the match against the East Tennessee State men’s tennis team, 4-3 Friday afternoon from Cookeville, Tenn.

The Buccaneers (8-10, 5-1 SoCon) started out fast, winning the first three singles matches. Gustavo Gomez defeated Gernot Fischer of Tennessee Tech, 6-3, 6-4. The win is Gomez’s 20th consecutive victory and moves him into second on the ETSU all-time singles victory list (105 wins). Juan Yannuzzi won his 15th of his last 16 matches, defeating Mario Schmidt of Tennessee Tech at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-3. Pablo Sahagun kept up the Buccaneers momentum, beating Piotr Wawrzyniak at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

Tennessee Tech then took control, winning the final three singles matches. Louis Aguerrevere of Tennessee Tech defeated Roberto Fernandez at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-3. At No. 5 singles, the Golden Eagles’ Ravane Ille defeated Francisco Diaz in a tight match, 7-5, 7-5. In the final singles match, Antonio Bugge fell to Jorge Ascencio of Tennessee Tech at No. 6 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

With the match tied at three, the winner would be determined by the doubles point. Tennessee Tech won two of three doubles matches to win the point and the match. Gomez and Fernandez of ETSU defeated Fischer and Ille at No. 1 singles, 8-6. At No. 2 singles, Yannuzzi and Diaz of ETSU fell to Wawrzyniak and Simon Trembly, 8-1. In the final doubles match, Aguerrevere and Ascencio defeated ETSU’s Sahagun and Poole at No. 3 doubles, 8-2 to secure the match.

The Buccaneers return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. as they host SoCon rival College of Charleston. RESULTS:
