Johnson City, Tenn.-- The East Tennessee State mens tennis team defeated SoCon rival Appalachian State, 5-2 Sunday afternoon from Boone, N.C.
The Buccaneers (6-7, 3-1 SoCon) picked up singles wins at No. 1, 2, 4 and 5. Gustavo Gomez picked up his 12th consecutive singles win, defeating Greg Rice at No. 1, 6-2, 6-4. Marcos Pavlovich defeated Dennis Holman at No. 2, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. At No. 4, Juan Yannuzzi earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Brian Shuster. The final singles victory came as Pablo Sahagun defeated Rick Ormsby at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-2.
Appalachian States Doug Ormsby defeated Roberto Fernandez at No. 3 singles in a tight match, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. The Mountaineers picked up their final singles win as Rick Hauchman defeated Antonio Bugge at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-0.
The Buccaneers won the doubles point after taking two of three matches. Gomez and Fernandez defeated Rice and Holman at No. 1 doubles, 8-4. Pavlovich and Yannuzzi picked up a victory over D. Ormsby and Hauchman, 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. Sahagun and Bugge fell in the final doubles match of the day to R. Ormsby and Shuster, 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
It is good to get back on the winning track, said Buccaneer coach Dave Mullins. The guys played tough and pulled out some tight matches.
The Buccaneers return to action on Thursday, March 29 as they travel to Georgia Southern.
