JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Members of the East Tennessee State men's tennis team were in competition Thursday from the Omni Hotels ITA Region II Championships from the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Junior Roberto Fernandez (Cuernavaca, Mex.)defeated Sasa Ljumic of Campbell, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of qualifying singles. He then defeated Glauco Nascimento of Hampton, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in the second round. Fernandez then fell to Derrick Spice of Wake Forest, 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of qualifying.
Junior Pablo Sahagun (Cuernavaca, Mex.) begins action in the main draw of the tournament Friday morning at 9 a.m. against Mike Duquette of the University of Virginia.
The doubles team of Fernandez and Sahagun begin play in the main draw of the tournament this evening at 6:30 p.m. against Jacob Nordwall and Joakim Peterson of Charlotte.
Play continues at the Omni Hotels ITA Region II Championships from the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. until Sunday, October 28.
