ETSU men's tennis defeats Lipscomb 6-1; Virginia Intermont 7-0

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (February 4, 2007) - No. 46 ETSU men's tennis gained their second win against an Atlantic Sun conference team this season defeating Lipscomb 6-1. They then went on to defeat Virginia Intermont 7-0 at the ETSU Tennis Center today. The Bucs improve to 8-1 on the season and 2-0 against conference opponents.

 

The Bucs started the day against Lipscomb University and took the early lead with the doubles point. Travis Sandlant (Werribee, Australia) and Alex Ahlgren (Tyreso, Sweden) defeated Daniel Hangstefer and David Carrillo 8-2 in the No. 1 position. Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and Sebastian Serrano (Cartagena, Colombia) defeated Mike Sherman and Colten Jones 8-2 in the No. 2 position, while Predrag Burmazovic (Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro) and Ricardo Rojas (Caracas, Venezuela) defeated Jeff West and Andy Mizell 8-4 in the No. 3 position.

 

Leading the Bucs in the No. 1 singles position, Felix Insaurralde defeated Mike Sherman 6-1, 6-1, while Olivares eased past West 6-0, 6-1 in the second position. Serrano overcame Carrillo 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 3 position while Burmazovic fell at No. 4 to Hangstefer 6-3, 7-5. Daniel Isaza (Medellin, Colombia) defeated Cummings in the No. 5 position 6-2, 6-0 and Ahlgren won his match 6-4, 6-3 against Jones in the sixth position.

 

In the afternoon match ETSU took on local team Virginia Intermont. The Bucs secured the first point sweeping all three doubles. Sandlant and Ahlgren defeated Jon Jonsson and Milan Kosicky 8-2 in the No. 1 position, while Olivares and Serrano also defeated their opponents Berhane and Fonseca 8-2 in the second position. Burmazovic and Rojas picked up another win at No. 3 against Mermut and Ramirez 8-4.

 

In singles action Insaurralde defeated Berhane 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 slot, while Olivares defeated Kosicky 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 2 position. Burmazovic picked up a win against Fonseca 6-2, 6-2 in the third position, while Sandlant cruised past Mermut 6-0, 6-1 in the fourth slot. Ahlgren overcame Ramirez 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 6 position, while Isaza fought out the last match of the day and gained a 6-3, 6-3 against Jonsson in the No. 5 position.

 

"It is always good to play teams from the local area, and it was great to follow up this morning with a win over another conference team Lipscomb after beating Belmont yesterday," said assistant coach Johan Dorfh "Travis, Alex and myself all came to ETSU from Virginia Intermont so we are thankful that they wanted to come over here and play us."

 

The Bucs will travel to Wake Forest and take on the Demon Deacons Sunday, February 11 at 5 p.m.
