ETSU men's tennis gears up for Southern Intercollegiate

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (September 7, 2006) - The ETSU men's tennis team will open up its fall season this weekend. The 38th annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships will be hosted by The University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. This year's field consists of players from 35 different schools.

The tournament will be comprised of three singles divisions and two doubles divisions. Div. I and II singles will feature full 64-man draws, while Div. III will be a 60-man bracket. There will also be two doubles divisions, with approximately 40 teams each.

Participating in Division I singles for ETSU are senior Felix Insaurralde (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela). In Division II singles, Sebastian Serrano (Cartagena,Colombia), Predrag Burmazovic (Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro), Lisandro Picardo (Mar Del Plata, Argentina), Daniel Isaza (Medellin, Colombia) will represent ETSU and Ricardo Rojas (Caracas, Venezuela), Alex Ahlgren (Tyreso, Sweden) Travis Sandlant (Werribee,  Australia) will be competing in Division III.

Doubles pairings for ETSU in the event will be Isaza/Sandlant in Division I and Olivares/Ahlgren, Serrano/Burmazovic, and Insaurralde/Picardo in Division II.

 

This tournament is the South's oldest annual tennis tournament, originating in 1968. The 2005 singles champion was John Isner of Georgia. The duo of Jonathan Stokke and Joey Atas of Duke won the doubles event.
