Serrano and Olivares advance to qualifying match at ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. (Oct. 2, 2007) - As doubles action began Tuesday in the qualifying draw of the ITA All-American Championships Sebastian Serrano (Cartagena, Colombia) and Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) won two straight matches to advance to the qualifying match set to begin on Wednesday.

 

In their first match of the day Serrano and Olivares defeated Kevin Dessauer and Jan Zelezny of LSU, 8-6 before dropping Matt Brown and Dominik Mueller of Baylor 8-6. They will face instate rivals Davey Sandgren and John-Patrick Smith of Tennessee in tomorrow's qualifying match at 1:30 p.m. CST. If they win the match they will advance to the main draw of the championships.

 

Competing in singles Serrano fell in a tight, 6-4, 6-3 match to No. 88 Andrei Daescu of Oklahoma in the third round of qualifying action. In the singles consolation draw Olivares fell to Bart van Monsur of Iowa, 6-4, 6-0.

 

"Sebastian played a good match and his opponent from Oklahoma was very solid. It was another windy day here in Tulsa and he battled through the elements and lost in a heroic battle. He's done very well in well in this tournament and has put forth a great effort winning four matches in three days," said assistant coach Johan Dorfh."
