Varon wins gold bracket title at UVA Fall Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Sept. 12, 2010) -
ETSU freshman Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela) won the gold flight singles championship to lead the Bucs at the UVA Fall Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Varon, who was making his first appearance in a collegiate tournament, defeated Camill Salomon of VCU, 6-6, 6-4 in the finals to earn the title. Varon won four straight matches on the weekend to gain the championship.
Also playing in his first career collegiate tournament, freshman Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) advanced to the consolation match finals in the red flight bracket. He eventually fell to M. Haskin of Cornell, 6-2, 6-3.
Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) also had a successful final day in Charlottesville as he earned fifth place in the white singles bracket. Bandres knocked off Gilbert Wong of Binghamton in the fifth place match, 6-2, 6-3.
"Overall I was pleased with the results today and was especially happy with the play of Jorge and Jesus this weekend," said ETSU men's tennis assistant coach Ricky Rojas.
The ETSU men's tennis team returns to action next weekend as they travel to Louisville, Ky. to participate in the Louisville Invitational.
