Bucs pick up right where they left off after day one

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Sept. 29, 2012) – The ETSU men’s tennis team continued its dominance on Saturday at Chattanooga’s Steve Baras Fall Classic, dropping just one singles match and winning all three doubles matches to advance to six different finals.

Sophomore Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) earned his spot in the top singles final, defeating Manuel Barroetavena of UTC in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Ribeiro will look to avenge senior Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) and defeat South Carolina’s Kyle Koch, who took out Bandres, 7-5, 6-2 on Satuday.

Senior Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) and junior Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) each won their respective Flight 2 semifinal matches, but will not compete against one another in the final. Junior Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela) will compete in the Flight 3 final, and sophomore Ricardo Pabon (Bogota, Columbia) will fight for the Flight 4 title.

ETSU’s doubles teams advanced without any blemishes. Bandres and Ribeiro defeated Lipscomb’s Strecker and Toliver, 8-5, while Ramirez and Varon eliminated Kennesaw State’s Pena and Toliver, 8-2, to setup another all-ETSU final in Flight 2. That final will not be contested, but Ordeig and Pabon will look to capture the Flight 3 crown after taking out The Citadel’s Bleach and Dedding, 8-4, in the semis.

“We took care of business today,” Director of ETSU Tennis Yaser Zaatini said. “We have a long way to go, but hopefully we’ll keep improving. If these guys keep working hard, and we can add a few solid pieces in the spring, then we should be a solid contender.”

Sunday’s doubles finals begin at 8:30 a.m., with the singles finals to follow around 10 a.m.
