Bucs capture four singles titles, one in doubles
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Sept. 30, 2012) – The ETSU men’s tennis team will head back to Johnson City with all four singles titles, going 3-0 on championship Sunday at the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic.
Sophomore Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) reeled in the top flight’s title, taking down South Carolina’s Kyle Koch in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Junior Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela) and sophomore Ricardo Pabon (Bogota, Columbia) won the Flight 3 and Flight 4 titles, respectively, with Varon outlasting Samford’s Austin Ackers, 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4), and Pabon blowing by UNC Greensboro’s Will Albright 6-2, 6-4.
The Bucs had already captured the Flight 2 singles and doubles titles on Saturday, as both finals consisted of all ETSU student-athletes. Neither match was contested.
“I think this week was a good test,” Director of ETSU Tennis Yaser Zaatini said. “There were some solid Southern Conference and Ohio Valley teams, and we were able to win a lot of matches. We tend to get beat up a lot in the fall, because we play a really rough schedule, but I think this was a good change to give our guys some confidence.”
Overall, ETSU posted an outstanding 20-1 singles record through the three-day tournament, along with a doubles mark of 6-1.
Next weekend, the Bucs are scheduled to travel to Charlottesville, Va. for the UVA Fall Classic.
