WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Oct. 19, 2012) – The ETSU men’s tennis team went 5-0 in doubles play on opening day of the 2012 USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, earning two of the eight spots in the quarterfinals.

Senior Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) and junior Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) won two matches after earning a first-round bye. The pair took out Lipscomb’s Miguel Cortez and Oliver Strecker, 9-7, in the round of 32, and earned a spot in the quarters by defeating Tennessee’s Rhys Johnson and Ryan Lipman, 8-6.

Senior Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) and junior Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela) made up the other ETSU doubles team. Ramirez and Varon went 3-0 on the day, including a second win over a Tennessee pair, defeating Connor Glennon and David O’Hare in the round of 16, 9-8.

Singles play did not go as well, as both Varon and Ordeig were defeated in the first round. Both losses came in straight sets, leaving ETSU with Bandres and Ramirez in the main draw.

“I’m very excited about how we performed in doubles,” Director of ETSU Tennis Yaser Zaatini said. “I’m even a little impressed as a matter of fact. Singles brought us back down to reality.”
