Doubles play to pick up Sunday
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Oct. 20, 2012) – Junior Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela) defeated IUPUI’s Nick Volz in a match tiebreak 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (13-11) on day two at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, and stands as ETSU’s lone remaining singles competitor in the tournament.
Day two of the regional championships was strictly singles play. Varon lost on day one in the main draw to begin Saturday in the consolation bracket. Junior Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) was also sent to the consolations after losing on Friday, but was defeated on Saturday as well by Kentucky’s Juan Pablo Murra 6-3, 6-2.
Seniors Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezulea) and Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) had byes in the first round of singles play, and began their run on day two in the second round. Bandres lost his first match to Austin Peay’s Sean Bailey, but Ramirez held his own against the Cumerberlands’ Juanio de le Lleara, 6-3, 6-4. Ramirez succumbed in the third round, falling to Tennessee’s Brandon T. Fickey 0-6, 6-2, 6-0.
“Our singles play was average at best,” Director of ETSU Tennis Yaser Zaatini said. “I feel we played decently, but far from what is expected. We had chances to win most of the matches and failed to close out the deal. I see a lot of upside in our future, but if we don’t close matches, I feel we’re in for a long year.”
All four Buccaneers remain in contention for the doubles title, and continue play in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
