ATHENS, Ga. (Nov. 9, 2012) – The ETSU men’s tennis team began the Bulldog Scramble on Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, with sophomore Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) going 2-0 to highlight the Bucs’ performance.
Ribeiro defeated Kentucky’s Ruygi Hirooka 6-3, 6-0, before downing UGA’s Marco Nunez in three close sets 6-7, 7-6, 7-5. THe ETSU sophomore was trailing 5-1 in set three, but climbed his way back by taking six consecutive games to close out the match.
Junior Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) was also in action, but fell to Georgia’s Eric Diaz 6-3, 7-5. Ordeig rebounded in his second match, taking out Mississippi State’s Ethan Wilkinson 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-0. Like Ribeiro, Ordeig came back from way down to take a set, stealing the first in a tiebreak after trailing 5-0.
"I was impressed by the way we fought," Director of ETSU Tennis Yaser Zaatini said. "My main objective is with these guys is to make sure they never give up, and they didn't. Losing is part of the game, but effort and fight should be our lifestyle."
The two Bucs continue the round-robin tournament on Saturday.
