Bucs defeat No. 33 Memphis in doubles, fall to No. 53 Alabama in singles
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Jan. 11, 2013) – The ETSU men’s tennis team began the Crimson Tide Indoor Invite on Friday from the University of Alabama Tennis Complex, defeating No. 33 Memphis in doubles action and falling to No. 53 Alabama in singles play.
No. 71 ETSU began the day at 3 p.m., taking down the Tigers in doubles by taking two of three matches. Senior Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) and sophomore Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) played on court one, defeating Connor Glennon and Lukas Vrnak, 8-5. Matches at courts two and three went to tiebreaks, with Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela) pulling out an 8-7 (7-2) decision to seal the victory. Ricardo Pabon (Bogota, Columbia) and Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) were not as fortunate, falling 8-7 (10-8).
“We played extremely solid in doubles,” Director of ETSU Tennis Yaser Zaatini said. “The guys believe in their doubles skills, and we managed to play solid and keep it strong in a couple matches where we were down heavy.
“In singles we just didn’t show up. Most of the guys, maybe five out of the seven, are not in playing shape. This is not anything new, but it’s just the way it is and we have to deal with it. We’ll just ride the storm and try to turn it around.”
ETSU was defeated 6-1 by Alabama in singles, as Ordeig was the only Buccaneer to pull out a win in a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Rens van der Vis on court four. Bandres, Ribeiro, Ramirez, Varon, Pabon and Connor Knox (Bristol, Tenn.) were all defeated.
The Bucs continue the spring tournament on Saturday, switching things up by taking on Memphis in singles and Alabama in doubles.
