WILMINGTON, N.C. (Feb. 21, 2014) – In action for the first time since Feb. 9, the ETSU men’s tennis team will hit the road this weekend to take on a pair of ranked opponents, visiting No. 51 UNC-Wilmington and No. 46 Elon.
LAST TIME OUT
The 63rd-ranked Buccaneers (3-7) earned their second win of the season over a nationally-ranked opponent, upsetting No. 61 Wichita State, 4-1. ETSU beat No. 58 earlier in the season.
Three ETSU players found the win column in singles play, including freshmen David Biosca (Sant Fruitos De Bage, Spain) and Ismael Merino (Lima, Peru), and junior Ricardo Pabon (Bogota, Columbia).
Pabon also teamed up with freshmen Conner Huertas Del Pino (Lima, Peru) to win at No. 3 doubles, while Merino and Diego Nunez (Monterrey, Mexico) earned a victory at No. 1 doubles.
Merino is pacing the Bucs this season with a team-best 6-3 record in singles play.
Eight of ETSU’s first 10 matches have come against nationally-ranked opponents. That trend will continue this weekend as the Bucs take on UNCW and Elon, both of which are ranked teams.
#51 UNCW – Saturday, Feb. 22 at 12:00 p.m. – LIVE STATS
The Seahawks (3-3) will enter Saturday’s match riding a two-match win streak, coming off wins over Mercer and College of Charleston.
UNCW’s three losses this season have all come against Top 40 opponents, as the Seahawks were bested by No. 14 Florida, No. 35 Florida State, and No. 24 Clemson.
#46 ELON – Sunday, Feb. 23 at 1:00 p.m.
Elon has won three consecutive matches, including a win against No. 65 Samford. Earlier this season, the Phoenix (4-1) knocked off No. 7 Duke on the road.
The Phoenix’s lone loss came on the road to No. 1 Virginia.
Elon is paced by No. 27 Cameron Silverman, who has gone 3-1 at No. 1 singles this season.
