No. 68 ETSU cruises to 7-0 win over The Citadel on Senior Day

Bucs remain unbeaten in SoCon, will close out regular season Saturday at 1pm vs. Furman

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 17, 2015) - Celebrating Senior Day, the 68th-ranked ETSU men's tennis team earned a convincing, 7-0 victory versus The Citadel Friday, extending its win streak to nine and clinching the Bucs' 12th win in their last 13 matches.

With the victory, the Buccaneers (13-7, 6-0 SoCon) remained as one of only two unbeaten teams remaining in the Southern Conference. ETSU will go toe-to-toe with the other unbeaten team, Furman (7-14, 5-0 SoCon) Saturday, April 18 at 1:00 p.m., in Johnson City in the Bucs' regular season finale.

Prior to Friday's match, ETSU recognized the contributions of outgoing senior Fernando Amon (Buenos Aires, Argentina), who earned a victory at No. 3 Doubles alongside Sebastian Yllera (Cinco Saltos, Argentina).

"Today was a happy victory, but a sad realization that one of our family members and teammates is leaving," ETSU head coach Yaser Zaatini said. "Fernando [Amon] has been a great part of this tennis team. He has been through thick and thin, put in the work, and never once complained about playing time. He is definitely going to be missed."

Amon and Yllera knocked off The Citadel's duo of Oliver Dedding and Joe Bove, 8-4.

ETSU's other two doubles teams also earned wins, allowing the Bucs to carry a 1-0 advantage into singles play. The Buccaneers have won the doubles point in each of their last seven matches.

With their victory at the top doubles spot, David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) and Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) extended their win streak to five matches. The duo has not lost a match since March 22.

The Buccaneers captured all six singles points Friday, including five straight-set wins.

"We stepped in, played solid, and handled the situation well," Zaatini said. "The Citadel is a young team, and is well coached by a veteran of a million battles. They were never going to be overlooked."

Yllera and Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) opened singles play with a pair of wins at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, respectively.

Redshirt junior Ricardo Pabon (Bogota, Colombia) followed suit, clinching the victory for ETSU with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 Singles.

Nunez, Huertas, and Ribeiro put the finishing touches on the Buccaneers' win, with each winning their respective match. At No. 3, Huertas came from behind to knock off The Citadel's Nicholas Bradley, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Ribeiro's win at the top spot marked his seventh-consecutive singles victory. Meanwhile, Yllera is currently in the midst of a six-match singles win streak.

The Buccaneers have posted a 12-1 record since Feb. 14, with the lone loss coming on the road to No. 5 Georgia.

ETSU will look to clinch the SoCon regular season title Saturday as the Bucs host Furman at 1:00 p.m., at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex in Johnson City for the Bucs' regular season finale. ETSU and Furman are the only unbeaten teams remaining in the conference.

The Southern Conference Men's Tennis Championship will be played April 24-26, with the quarterfinals taking place Friday, April 24 in Spartanburg, S.C., and the semifinals and final taking place April 25 and April 26, respectively, in Greenville, S.C.
