Men’s Tennis opens season in Florida with three matches

ETSU will play two matches on Saturday and one on Sunday

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Jan. 19, 2018) – To open their season, the ETSU men’s tennis team will travel to the sunshine state to kick off play. The Bucs will play three matches in Tallahassee, Fla., beginning with Florida A&M, followed by Florida State later in the day. On Jan. 21, they will take on Florida Gulf Coast.

About the Bucs

The 2017 SoCon Champs return four players in Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain), David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain), Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) and Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela). The Bucs also welcome two transfers in Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain), and Chris Mikrovas (Athens, Greece) and two freshmen, Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) and Tasei Miyamoto (Chiba, Japan). Herrera went 17-5 in singles last season and is ready to take on his final season in the blue and gold. ETSU will have a wealth of experience on this year’s roster.

About Florida A&M

The Rattlers will kick off their season by hosting the Bucs. It will be both teams first match of the 2018 season. They have a roster of seven with six juniors and one freshman. Much like ETSU’s, their roster features many international players.

About Florida State

Florida State is ranked 20th in the nation, tied with South Carolina. The Seminoles come into the weekend at 6-0. The Seminoles have three players ranked in the top 125 in the ITA rankings. They return eight players that have had experience in the NCAA tournament and are looking to continue to stay undefeated.

About Florida Gulf Coast

Florida Gulf Coast is coming off their second NCAA Tournament appearance. They were picked as the favorites in the ASUN coaches poll. They come into this weekend’s match at 0-2 with losses from UNC Wilimington and BYU.
