GREENVILLE, S.C. (March 23, 2018) – The ETSU men’s tennis team picked up their third straight conference win after defeating the Furman Paladins 5-2 on Friday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center. The Bucs improve to 8-5 and 3-0 in the SoCon, while handing the Paladins their first SoCon lost as they drop to 12-5 and 1-1 in the SoCon.
Furman won the first match to begin doubles, but Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) and Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) evened the decision with a 7-5 win over Drew Singerman and Ivan Mitric. Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) battled to win a tight match, but the duo clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (7-2) win.
Frazier Rengifo kept the momentum going for the Bucs after jumping out to a 6-1, 6-3 win against Drew Singerman. One of the longer matches of the day came from David Gonzalez (Barcleona, Spain). He defeated Jake Bhangdia 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to give the Bucs a 3-0 start. Sergi Fontcuberta clinched the match for ETSU after he defeated Ivan Mitric 6-3, 7-5. The Paladins would take the point at the No. 1 singles, after Cameron Green came back to win a three-set match against Robert Herrera. Sophomore Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) gave ETSU their last point of the match with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win against Jake Munns. The Paladins’ Daniel Vichnick and Tasei Miyamoto (Chiba, Japan) put up quite the fight at the No. 6 singles. Vishnick would win 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) to give Furman their second point of the match.
Before returning home for a five-match home stand, the Bucs will travel to Wilmington, N.C. to take on UNC-Wilmington this Sunday, March 25. The match is set for noon.
