WILMINGTON, N.C. (March 25, 2018) – The ETSU men’s tennis team wrapped up a five-match road swing after falling to UNC-Wilmington 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. The Bucs fall to 8-6, while UNCW improves to 13-2.
Barcelona, Spain natives Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) and Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) started things off for the Bucs with a 6-2 win. UNCW was able to even out the doubles point after they defeated ETSU’s No. 3 doubles 6-4. ETSU would take the doubles point, as Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) and Tasei Miyamoto (Chiba, Japan) would defeat Ignasi De Rueda and Raphael Calzi 6-4.
The Bucs had back-to-back wins to kick of singles play. Fontcuberta went undefeated on the day after earning a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 2 singles spot. Miyamoto followed in his footsteps after he defeated Daniel Groom 6-3, 6-2. UNCW then fought back to win fourth straight matches to take the overall win, as the very last points would come down to the wire. Lugo played at the No. 1 singles spot for the first time this season. He battled through a three-set match, but fell to Andres Torres 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. David Gonzalez also put up a fight at the No. 4 singles spot. Gonzalez took the first set, but was defeated by Michael Copeland 5-7, 6-0, 6-2. Miguel Este also fought hard, but fell 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 to Michael Morphy. With the match tied 3-3, it was up to Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) and Agus Savarino. Savarino won the first set 7-6, but Rengifo tied the match after winning the second set 6-3. With a 6-2 win in the final set, Savarino would pull away with the win to help his team clinch the match.
The Bucs return home to host five matches in a row, including three matches next week. First, they will host Charlotte on Thursday, March 29 in a non-conference battle, followed by back-to-back conference matches. They welcome Wofford on March 31 and Mercer on April 1.
